News of the morning

I've been accepted to Stanford.

I guess that makes me 4 for 5. Or 3 for 3, if you count the ones I'm seriously considering.

It all feels more than a little unreal.

Princeton said yes

I went to sleep at 3 pm totally exhausted (I hadn't slept since 7 last night since I had a paper due), but when I woke I had an admissions offer from Princeton in my email inbox. With FIVE years of full fellowship funding, for the regular school year plus potentially summer as well. PLUS a first-year signing bonus.

Um. WOW.

I got a few more photos back from the developer. Here's a photo of my wonderful floormates:

photos from the Philippines trip

I picked up some of my photos the other day when I went to CVS to buy Gatorade for my poor stomach. I'm really annoyed that they lost one roll. I hope they find it soon.

So here are a few of the cuter shots:

umbrella garden

The best thing about a rainy day in the dorms is that the hallway flowers with umbrellas of many colors and patterns: lavender, black, red, yellow, leopard, plaid...

jet lag

The next installment in the jet lag saga: I woke up at 4:30. But this is a good thing.

I managed to sleep last night around 10:30, which means I managed six continuous hours of sleep! My stomach is doing better too. I think the combination of the motion sickness pill I took to knock myself out, the sound of the rain through my open window, and forcing myself to stay awake most of yesterday finally did the trick. I had the hardest time staying awake in the late afternoon, but managed to do a ton of hand laundry because it was the only mindless thing I could think of to keep me busy.

Last night Charlotte, Laura, and I took Seung Hee out to Penang for dinner, since her birthday was on Thursday. I'd never been to Penang before. It was cozy but a little loud--a haven after being outdoors in the cold rain and wind (particularly cold since I'd misplaced my hat and gloves again). We had pineapple fried rice, mango chicken, chicken chow fun, and coconut prawns (which were awesome). We stopped by the Dudley House 80's party on the way back, but I wasn't too tempted.

RA interview

I had another very nice day today. I've been called for an interview to be a Resident Advisor in the dorms. If I manage to land a position I'd have guaranteed housing at Harvard next year, for free. Plus 10 free meals per week at Dudley House!

I got about eight assorted hours of sleep last night: 10-12, 12-2, 2-4, 6-8. It's an improvement, I think, in quantity at least. Maybe tonight I can make it continuous.

I had an odd experience at lunch. I was sitting at a little square table near the entrance to Dudley by myself, and a group of six guys came in from the foyer and crowded around my table. One, a rather chubby blond one, sat down across from me and asked if he could have a photo with me "as if we were having a conversation", supposedly for a photography class. His friend pulled out a disposable camera and proceeded to take a photo. Photography class with disposable cameras? I asked. Then they started to try to convince me to come to House of Blues tonight, and they gave me a sticker for Massive Attack's 100th Window album. I just thanked them politely and finally they left me alone with my chicken picatta and veggies. I still have no idea what that was all about, but it felt like a frat initiation procedure or something like that. Very strange.

Unfortunately I was sleepy again after lunch, and passed out while trying to read my medieval Latin. When Jason knocked on my door at 4 to say hello he woke me up. I had missed the first hour of my law school seminar, which starts at 3.

I rushed out the door so fast I left all my readings behind in my room, and had to look on with someone else in class. Donahue must think I'm such a flake. But the part of seminar I did manage to catch was fun--we were talking about medieval secular and church law about marriage and "shacking up" (contubernium).

After seminar finished I had a nice chat with one of my classmates, Leonard, a G1 (first-year grad student) in Middle Eastern Studies and History, fresh out of a master's program at Oxford. I've seen him every month at the GDC meetings, but have never been able to remember his name. Hopefully it will stick this time.

Breaking news...

Just half an hour ago Katy Park told me I got into Harvard, with a fellowship.

I couldn't be happier!

not feeling so well

I think I'm sick. I feel feverish and my stomach is upset.

I drowsed through most of my Medieval Law course, and then I walked into my History of the Book course to find out that there was a paper due today that I knew nothing about. It was like a nightmare, and getting no sleep last night just added to my confusion.

I napped after lunch for a couple of hours; since then I've stayed awake making trips back and forth to the bathroom.

I picked up my mail to find that I was rejected at John Hopkins and accepted at Wisconsin. No word back yet from Harvard, Princeton, or Stanford.

I also picked up my new digital camera from the mailroom. I unpacked it to find that the viewscreen had been smashed in transit. I guess I will be mailing it back tomorrow.

An hour ago, when I was trying to balance my checkbook, the fire alarm went off. Someone on the second floor burned whatever it was they were cooking. I threw my coat on over my pajamas and trudged downstairs with the rest of the girls, most of whom had been sleeping. Fortunately it wasn't very cold today; in the 40s. It only takes 15 minutes or so for the fire department to respond, but it feels like forever.

I'm going to make dinner tonight instead of trusting my poor little stomach to Dudley. Something simple. And then I'm going to sleep early.

insomnia

Yikes, it's been a long time since I last posted.

I have complete and total insomnia. Jet lag. Or something.

My direct flight yesterday at 1:30 out of San Jose was cancelled, and instead they put me on an earlier flight connecting through St. Louis, leaving San Jose at 12:40. It was 11:15 when I talked to the airline. I woke up Brian and we rushed to the airport by 11:30.

My plane got into Boston around 11:30 pm, and my luggage came through round midnight. I took a taxi home and arrived around 12:30. Since then I've been unpacking and cleaning up and eating (all I had to eat today was the little bag of pretzels that American Airlines gives you for a snack). I tried to sleep, but have too much energy.

I have class at 10 am. I guess I will be sleeping in class...
