back from Cambridge

Spent the weekend in Cambridge for a change of scene while trying to read for Generals; made some progress. Had a fantastic dinner at East Coast Grill in Inman Square with Sandra & Arthur last night, followed by ice cream at Christine's (which I also highly recommend).

This morning, sat in on Professor Murdoch's class on uses of "authority" in medieval scholasticism, just for fun.

Had a yummy lunch at Penang with Kevin and Matthew Fluet and another one of their officemates just before going back on the Greyhound. I really wish we had something like Penang on Nassau St. here.

the passing of the buck

Last night was the traditional Passing of the Buck dinner with the Dean of the Graduate School that marks the transition between the 2004-2005 House Committee and the 2005-2006 House Committee. It's a real actual tradition. One of my professors at Harvey Mudd, van Hecke, organized it in 1963 or something like that back when he was a grad student living at the GC, and part of the House Committee. Anyway, we had appetizers at Wyman House, then the speeches etc., and then trotted over to dinner at High Table in Procter Hall, and finally returned to Wyman House for coffee and desserts.

But one of the more amusing parts of the evening (besides the spectacle of me trying to give a farewell address) was the Dean's cat Gulliver, who kept trying to eat all the appetizers, and then went after the dessert trays of cookies and fruit.

Avenue Q outing

Today was the Graduate School-organized trip to New York City to see the Broadway musical Avenue Q. It was a particularly cold and snowy day for March, so it was absolutely wonderful to only have to worry about getting to the chartered bus on time. The bus dropped us off right in front of the theater.

We had a little time before the show, so we (me, Leo, Andrew, Andrew, and ?) went to Yoshinoya for a cheap and quick dinner, then stopped by Cold Stone Creamery on the way back to the theater. It was my first time ever at CSC--for those of you who don't know, CSC is like Starbucks for ice cream, with an assemble-your-own array of ice cream flavors and stuff they mix into the ice cream for you. I had a lemon sorbet with strawberries mixed into it, which turned out quite nicely.

I really enjoyed Avenue Q, even more than I expected to--and my expectations going into it were pretty high, not least because of the ticket cost, which was $40 even after the Graduate School subsidy and 'Family Circle' location within the theater. The show has been described as a 'twisted' or 'edgy' version of Sesame Street, which is not inaccurate. It was absolutely hilarious. I would definitely recommend it--though not for kids or those easily offended by suggestive and crude humor. I'm so glad I had the chance to go see it at last.

Dessert from the Little Chef

Kevin described this as a lemon meringue pie without the crust. Not sure what the Little Chef called it, but it was really fantastic.

wishful thinking

eBay item #4972058268

The last little thing my Victorian costume needs is a pair of earrings. (I couldn't resist bidding, but sadly didn't even get anywhere near the reserve price...)
