GC wildlife

the cicadas are here...

and they're ugly...

and there are a LOT of them.

Both the squirrels and I are tired of them now. Fortunately, unlike the squirrels, I'm not tired of them because I've eaten myself sick on them.

the perks of not moving out

Neha came by last night to pass along a bouquet of flowers that she couldn't take with her on her flight to California early this morning.

I love these flowers. Their scent reminds me of a tremendous beautiful bouquet I got once in my tiny room in Rome...

cats and dogs

I really didn't get much done today.

It was hot and humid, and I was grouchy. I wish I had a pet to keep me company. I wish I had a fennec.

After brunch I tried to read, but couldn't really concentrate.

I made myself walk out to Panera and get dinner, though I could see it was getting cloudy. While I ate I listened in on some Rhodes scholar applicant enumerating all the influential people his parents knew who were trying to pull strings on the selection committee for him. It was rather depressing.

On the way back there were an incredible amount of cicadas crawling all over the sidewalk. I passed a clump of pre-teen girls who were shrieking and squealing (loud enough to hurt my ears) because they had sandals on with their pretty summer dresses. Having bugs so near their bare little toes was freaking them out. I strode on by, secure in my sneakers.

After dinner I called a few people, and then a tremendous thunderstorm rolled in. It's been flashing and booming ever since. I went down to the D-bar just when it opened, because the thunderstorm was making me nervous, and chatted with Judy for a bit.

Once the live jazz band started playing and the smoke in the room thickened, I had had enough. I went home and washed the smoke out of my hair. Maybe now that the storm has settled, I'll be able to go to sleep without the thunder keeping me up.

a new look

Hardly slept, trying to get a first draft of my 1st-year research paper submitted to my advisor by 1:30 pm.

At 1:45, Murat gave me a ride over to the optometrist for my annual checkup. Everything was fine; just a very slight increase in the prescription for one eye.

Since it was covered in my insurance, I went ahead and chose new frames...smaller this time, more oval-shaped, more librarian-ish, from Valentino. I can't find any pictures on the web, so you'll have to wait till I get them to see me model them.

I spent the rest of the day napping at my carrel in the library, since my eyes were too dilated to get any useful work done.
